Cyber Explorers: Knowledge Constructor and Educational Technologies

ISTE standards for learners:

Knowledge Constructor

  • Standard 3a: Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits
  • Standard 3b: Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility, and relevance of information, media, data, or other resources
  • Standard 3c: Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions
  • Standard 3d: Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories, and pursuing answers and solutions

Free technology/Web-based technology where ISTE standards for learners can be applied together in a learning context:
  • A website that can be used to explore knowledge construction using educational technologies is called PebbleGo Next. This website helps students learn how to research topics effectively using database-like interfaces other than Google. PebbleGo Next offers various media for students to use and how to use it, such as articles, videos, and citations/sources. This website can be utilized in a lesson that involves the development of research strategies. Standard 3a. states, "Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits." (ISTE). Having students practice their research skills helps them seek out reliable sources and how they are structured.

Learning activities with the selected educational technologies and ISTE standards for learners:
  • PebbleGo Next Research Challenge (ISTE Standard 3a): Students will log in to their PebbleGo account and begin to navigate through the PebbleGo Next American Indian History Article List
Students will be paired up with a classmate and will select two articles to focus on researching two American Indian Tribal Nations. Once the paired students have chosen the American Indian Tribal Nations they want to study; they will each summarize their findings and share them with one another. Then, they will choose which of the two Tribes they have more information and resources available and create a minimum six-slide PowerPoint presentation on their findings. Students will be required to cite the article(s) they used in the final slide of their PowerPoint.
  • PebbleGo Next Animal Project (ISTE Standard 3c): Students will log in to their PebbleGo account and go to the Guided keyword search or the Large, Visual search.
They will use this search box to research a specific bird of their choice. They will be able to use fact sheets, videos, articles, etc., available on PebbleGo to gather information on the birds’ food, habitat, life cycle, etc. Once the student gathers enough information, they will use their findings to create a physical trifold presentation or a digital collage/fact sheet to present. Students will present their project and ensure to submit a bibliography of the various sources they used from PebbleGo.
